OUR COASTAL TREASURE
Kromme Bridge and the mud banks below
(Park near the launch site under the bridge)
On the mud banks closer to the Kromme Bridge, especially at low tide, you may encounter birds attracted to the water. Many birds also feed along the river and in the marshy swamps on the north bank of the river.
African Sacred Ibis
White and black, with a very curved bill; a close cousin of the well-known Hadeda.
Spoonbill
A large, white bird with a red face and a bill shaped like a long spoon for filtering the water.
Little Egret
Small and heron-like, this bird carefully steps through the water, displaying its yellow feet at the ends of its black legs.
The smaller birds swooping over and under the bridge are martins and swifts.
