OUR COASTAL TREASURE

Rocky shores and rock pools

Children and adults alike are drawn to the rocky shores around the St Francis Bay area.

Adults may wish to cast in a line and catch a fish, or sit and absorb the beauty of the rolling waves and splashing waters. The area between high- and low-tide marks is packed with fascinating creatures that survive not only daily immersion and exposure, but also the continuous battering of forceful waves.

Children (of all ages), on the other hand, are fascinated by the creatures that live in the rockpools; these little ecosystems are filled with unusual life forms that have magical colours and shapes, and tell remarkable tales about adaptation and survival. Hours of entertainment can be gained from gazing into rockpools, but only if one is armed with a basic understanding of the conditions that shape life in this inhospitable environment.
